The Lake Chinocup Catchment agreed to have Carbon Neutral plantings as a three-year project site.

Seedlings have been planted in 2004 & 2005 with a further 20 000 seedlings being planted for 2006. The total for the three year project is 60,500 seedlings.

The main concern for the landholders in the catchment is the rising groundwater table and the excess salt that is being brought to the surface, causing the soil to be unproductive for farming practices.

With the aid of Carbon Neutral trees we hope that some areas can be controlled and the water table lowered. It is evident from inspecting the landscape that many more trees need to be planted.
Minnivale Catchment

The Minnivale Catchment is east of Dowerin with some but limited landcare work achieved.

The seedlings have been funded through the Carbon Neutral Program to offset the carbon dioxide emissions from the Water Corporation’s fleet for 2005/6.

The site follows a creek line running from a piece of remnant vegetation down to a neighbouring property. 50 000 seedlings will assist in stabilising the soil around the creek decreasing the level of water erosion and will also create an important wildlife corridor for the many native birds and reptiles found throughout the area.

The trees will be planted in the main recharge zone at the beginning of the catchment, to reduce the amount of leakage to the underground water system. Excess leakage is the main cause for salinity in the valley floors.

Both paddocks are in excellent condition. They are weed free, fenced, and have adequate firebreaks.

Due to little or no rain and a major locust attack the survival rate of seedlings is only around 40%.  Carbon Neutral will conduct infill planting in winter 2007.

November 2007 update
The infill planting of 30 000 native species this winter has gone very well due to better rainfall.  The survival rate is 96%.

The Dowerin project is a result of an increasing ground water system in a low-lying area of land.

A pocket of salt has developed in once valuable cropping land. The landowner carries little sheep and therefore has decided to completely revegetate the site.

Work began a number of years ago by placing rows of trees around an area that was showing signs of salinity. As we now understand, this was a bandaid solution. The project has strengthened from this experience, with plans to revegetate the whole inside area.

To strengthen the survival rates, the seedlings being used are native to the area and are also all salt tolerant species. 7 500 seedlings are being planted on behalf of the City of Stirling. Other individual and organisation subscribers will be responsible for another 12 500 seedlings being planted on the site.
April 2007 update

The site is in good condition.  The site appears weedy, but it is actually Samphire and Saltbush.

Although this site had little to no rain and a major locust attack the survival rate is around 80%.

November 2007 update
This site is looking fantastic, and the trees are 2-4ft.  There is an 84% survival rate.
