Quairading

Planting site 35

This property is north of Quairading with some landcare work already performed. In 2007 we will be contributing 20,000 oil mallees in areas prone to land degradation.

The seedlings will prevent erosion from prevailing winds across bare paddocks, protecting the soil and the live stock found on the property. They will also be useful in taking up excess water and preventing water erosion and water logging and salinity problems.

This site is looking great despite one wind blown corner and has an excellent overall 95% survival rate.

Merredin

Planting site 49

This property is south east of Merredin and has planted many oil mallees in the past four years through different local and regional projects. In 2007 we will be planting 6,000 oil mallees with the intention to plant many more in the future coinciding with the rotational cropping system the landowners have in place.

The seedlings are planted on the contour lines to prevent erosion and in strategic locations through the paddocks. They are used along seepage lines to dry up areas prone to water logging which in turn prevents the likelihood of these areas becoming salty.

April 2008 update

This has been a fantastic result for a low rainfall area with an 87% survival rate.
