Three years ago this property was purchased from intensive sheep farmers that degraded the land and the major creek system running the length of it. The property is at the top of the Catchment and all the nutrients, excess water, silt and salts that come off this property runs down into the neighbouring farms.

The owners have been proactive in gaining funding to fence the creek line and remnant vegetation off and begin to revegetate areas that are either degraded due to water erosion or in danger to becoming too salty.  40,000 biodiversity seedlings will be planted and 59,000 oil mallee seedlings. This property will still have large areas to revegetate and we will be able to contribute mixed native seedlings for many years to come.

April 2008 update
The most recent visit to this property saw a 94% survival in the mixed biodiversity planting and 93% in the oil mallees.  The landowners have been taking great care of the seedlings and there is very little weed burden, which helps the seedlings immensely.

The owners purchased a neighbouring block to their original farm to continue on work from a large drainage line including revegetating and earthworks creating a flow of salty water downstream.

100,000 seedlings will be planted on the property in 2007 with similar amounts planned for the next few years. The seedlings will be planted by a very experienced local contractor who is also growing the mixed local native seedlings. The seedlings will use much of the excess water and be used as a filtering system before the water flows downstream into other properties.

Unfortunately, very dry conditions have resulted in poor survival on this site – just under 40%.  19,000 seedlings will be infill planted this year and the rainfall monitored closely.

The last three years, Carbon Neutral has contributed 60,000 seedlings to the Lake Chinocup Catchment which surrounds the town of Pingrup. This year we will be contributing a further 20,000 seedlings to one property.  13,000 are mixed biodiversity seedlings in site 34 and the remaining 7,000 oil mallees in site 46.

The mixed local native seedlings will be used to control the spread of salinity by lowering the ground water table and increasing the biodiversity from degraded remnant stands of bush.

This site has become dry and a little salty due to low rainfall and will require infill.
